Frequently Asked Questions |
How come you guys teach
courses and not drop in classes?
When people first
learn to dance they improve faster when learning
in a structured way. It becomes easier for the
teacher to see who is 'getting it' and who needs
extra help. You benefit from clear goals, better
revision and get to know people easier.
How
hard is it to learn Rock'n'Roll?
Like most things in
life it depends on the quality of your tuition
and how much you practice. Our style is informal
making it easy to pick up for social dancing. At
the same time it is based on standards
recommended by the
Australian Rock'n'Roll Dancesport
Council. We believe in teaching the principles
of correct leading and following which can take a while
to master.
How
long will it take before I can dance?
You can learn enough
to have fun with it in as little as 5 weeks.
Expect to be really proficient in 3-6 months. It
really depends on how 'sporting' you are, your natural
feel for music and how hungry you are for it. Of
course, one can go on learning Rock'n'Roll for a lifetime .
. .
Do
you teach other styles of dance?
Our areas of
expertise are Rock'n'Roll and Rockabilly. If we
tried to teach everything we'd never get enough
time to practice it ourselves. We believe it's
better to learn from someone who is really good
at what they do, rather than a
jack-of-all-trades.
Will I learn the latest dance steps?
I know with Ballroom
the moves tend to go in and out of fashion.
Lucky for us Rock'n'Roll is not so restrictive.
You can do what you like and no one else is
keeping score. But just like Ballroom we are
always evolving. Rock'n'Roll is endlessly
creative. There is always something new to keep
it fresh.
So
how and where do I start?
The first step is
learning the basics by doing our two 5-week
beginners courses. They fit neatly into a term
and you'll learn everything you need to begin
reaping the rewards of knowing how to dance.
It's as easy as going to our
payments page and filling out the booking
form.
If you are already further
along you'll have to wait until 2009 when we
plan to phase in intermediate classes.
Finances are tight. Can't
I pay each week?
Processing payments
takes heaps of time which cuts into the class
when people arrive late. Paying for the course
upfront also creates a stronger incentive for
you to turn up. It's the most effective way to
run the classes and for you to learn. So . . .
not at this point in time.
I have a few injuries. Am I too old for
Rock'n'Roll?
Rock'n'Roll can be
danced at any age. Naturally, if you have a
health condition you may need to 'hold back' a
bit to not make it worse. While there are risks
associated with any physical activity, national
health authorities advise that the greatest
risk is in not exercising at all.
Why should I choose
Rock'n'Roll over other forms of dance?
The first thing to
consider when choosing a dance style is whether
you like the music. After that, the environment
it offers. Rock'n'Roll is informal, creative and
energetic - great if fitness is important to
you. Perth Rock'n'Rollers are a friendly bunch
so expanding your social circle should be easy.
It really is a personal thing. Try it and see if
it fits.
